Measures round your middle (a normal tape measure will do).
It has been suggested that if waist circumference rises above 90cm (35.5in) in men and above 80cm (31.5 in) in ladies, the risk of metabolic complications is increased. Weight reduction is strongly advised if waist circumference is more than 102cm (40in) in men and 88cm (35in) in ladies, as this represents a considerably increased medical risk.
Reduction in waist circumference may take some time to materialize, so it is advisable to use this method in conjunction with another body measurement that may be more sensitive to changes, such as weight. It has been recommended that sex-specific waist circumference cut-off points need to be developed for various populations because people from various ethnic backgrounds vary in their level of risk for diseases like coronary heart illness and Kind 2 diabetes.
Extremely simple to do. Recent evidence suggests that waist circumference on its personal may prove very helpful. It correlates closely with BMI and WHR (see beneath) and is a great index of intra-abdominal fat mass and total body fat.
